Title: Ys Typing Tutor Game.
Post by: NightWolve on Aug. 15, 2006, 08:35:41 AM
I had this work sitting on my computer for about a year or more now and decided to whip up an installer to package it all up for release upon someone's inquiry into this project. Most probably didn't know I was interested in this, but you do now. Unfortunately Psycho DeuceBag never finished translating all the words either due to lack of interest and/or time as it were. I had some programming changes to make as well, like getting rid of one of the text lines, since before you had Japanese on one line & English on the other, now you have English plus English (you'll see what I mean) - but anyway, I never found the time to finish that up either. This typing tutor game doesn't really rise super high on the Ys fan todo priority list, if you will. Anyway, I've gone public with what I did so now you can check this minigame out that was hidden with Zwei!!. The graphics were designed with Ys II Complete, not the older Ys II Eternal version of the PC product, so you'll note that while playing it if you already finished Ys II Complete.

A project page is now up with 8 screenshots here:

Well, now I must sleep. Hope you enjoy it. It's quite a novelty.

Get ready for a massive update to this. I've got the text translated and I've fixed the font. I'm in the tweaking and editing stage, so very soon all that Romanji will be gone with the nice new version I'm cooking up.

Wow! And here I thought I'd never have an actual opportunity to play this game. Your projects for Ys never cease to amaze Nightwolve and this is a very nice and very rare addition for the avid Ys fan! ^_^

Reminds me a great deal of The Typing of the Dead, except most of all of it seems to be Ys related. Too bad I'm a terrible typest. Velagunder is currently hosing me down with those one shot letter attacks.

Thanks for taking the time to do this one!

Yeah, what is this Typing of the Dead from? In referrer links I'm finding where they're plugging my project, they've been making a reference to Typing of the Dead for comparison.

Well the Wikipedia article probably explains it better, but basically it was a total rehash of the shooting game House of the Dead II for arcade, except now the characters have dreamcast batterypacks and keyboards strapped to them instead of guns. The game was originally released for the Dreamcast as more or less a parody of the series, but it is quite fun for a typing tutor and by now has a cult following. There is a PC version of the game as well and it was very cheap when I bought it awhile back.

As for the game itself, it makes you type various words and phrases like the Ys typing tutor except the words, phrases and sentences are extemely odd and randomized each time you play. The bosses were interesting because each one would require a specific typing requirement or penalty of sorts as you try to beat the life out of them with your keystrokes.

But yeah, if you enjoy the Ys typing tutor, I'm sure you'll love this one as well.

The dialogue in the game is absolutely horrendous and comical, comparable to the first Resident Evil's dialgogue. My buddy and I still laugh our asses off when we play TotD and end up not saving one of the many random people you are able to save if you can type the word fast enough, when the main character turns around to talk to their support team in a very badly acted monotome voice "There was nothing we could do...".

Quite a fun game this, even though I suck and only type at an average of 180 keys per minute or whatever it was it counted, well with several errors. I really need to learn to properly type some day.

The most fun typing game I've seen though was a gem for the Dreamcast called Typing of the Date. Now that game was just hillarious as I had a friend translate it for me on the fly. Really need to learn enough to play that game again someday.

Thanks for this one, NightWolve!

Nicely done! Picked this up a little while ago. Wish I had this back when I was learning to type as a kid! The thought of fighting monsters with Adol when I was 6 woulda kept me typing late into the night!

Nice work.
