Title: Help: popular 80s terms and catchphrases
Post by: Haven on Apr. 01, 2006, 07:52:18 PM
Yo dudes

I would just like to know any popular 80s terms and catchphrases.

And no patented and copyrighted ones please^^

So far I know a few like "tubulars" and "radicals" and Bart's "Eat my Shorts".

Please list as much as you can.
I want the really popular ones that a lot of people would recognize^^

I appreciate it.
Thank you very very much^^

EDIT: Oh and yeah could you describe how they're used too?

Thanks

This is a strange topic, but I guess I'll try and contribute.

totally, sucks, way cool, grody, loser, spazz, fresh, bad (positive term), awesome

Bad to the Bone
Cut it out
Dog-eat-dog
Get outta here!

That's really all I can think of that came from the 80s.

Peace Out
Jest

"Dog-eat-dog" and "cut it out" are not from the 80's - they existed before, and didn't become more popular during the 80's.
"Way cool" is from teh '90's.
"tubular" and "radical" were not pluralized, but were popular.

How about:
Valley girl
airhead
Gag me with a spoon
Totally !
"Like, ..."
gnarly
Dude (to call somebody without using his name)

...and of course the polar opposites: "awesome" and "bogus".

In smaller circles, I knew people who used those as relative measurement, with "awesomeness" and "bogosity" (made-up term).

In theory, this conversation could have existed:
"Dude, I just asked that Valley Girl out..."
"Isn't she a bit of an airhead ?"
"Like, TOTALLY, Dude !"
"Whoa, she looks awesome.... what did she say ?"
"She said, "Ew.... Like, gag me with a spoon..." "
"Dude, that's bogus..."

Like taken out of any 80's movie, hehe. :)

Makes me think of Corey Feldman, hehehe.

or

"I'm gonna beat you all up!!!"

Thanks

From Mr. T:
"I pity the fool !!"

or, the way he said it, it was more like:
"Ahh PITY da Fool !!!!"

"Sike" and "....NOT!" were from the later 80's if I remember correctly. There were popular combos like "totally rad!". Most people consider the 80's era as 81-85/86 as the later 80's was more hip-hop....word!

I always hated "stoked" from that dumb commercial that popularized it. I can't remember exactly the context of it; it was like IT/computer/business related or something. Anyway, I hate it...
