Ys I & II Complete / RE: Ys 1&2 Complete Installation
« on: Feb. 09, 2006, 01:06:14 AM »
If you're on Win9X/ME, you will need to install manually like mjmmx says since there's no support for switching to Japanese mode. Here's how:
Quote
Make a folder tree named \FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN somewhere on your hard
drive - C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN for example. Next, go to your Ys COMPLETE
CD or DVD and copy everything to your new local folder from YS1_WIN (for the
LE version) or YS1_CMP (if you've got the XP or PE version), but MINUS the
'save' subfolder! The trick is to exclude that 'save' subfolder because it
contains a text file whose name is encoded with Japanese S-JIS characters.
Any attempt at copying this file by the Setup program or even manually by
using Explorer will result in failure. So, that explains why you can't
install it normally (unless you're booted in Japanese mode, something you
can't do in Windows® 98/ME). Anyway, now on your hard drive you should have
a file/folder tree looking like this:

     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\YS1_WIN.EXE
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\DATA\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\MIDI\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\*.*
     C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\WAVE_44\*.*

Etc. Got it? Good. About the 'wave' folder: If you have the 2
CD Limited Edition set, you'll also have to get the 2nd CD and
continue copying from that. Otherwise, in order to have wave
playback in the game, you'll always have to have the 2nd (Game)
CD inserted or mounted. You're basically doing a FULL install
by copying all the waves to disk. By doing this, you can also
take advantage of the alternate soundtrack that's recently been
released by Psycho DeuceBag, FYI. Anyhow, that should do it. Just run
my patcher after that and you're all set, ya heathen...

Well, that's good. I do install the Indeo codec for you to solve most problems with movies, but in this case, I dunno what the problem is. If keeping AVI movie support disabled through the configuration utility works, I guess you're stuck with that, but at least that allows you to go forward. You can watch the two AVIs in the data folder with a media player anyhow, so no big loss there.

Ys I & II Complete / RE: I'm having a problem with the Ys II patch...
« on: Feb. 03, 2006, 04:53:33 AM »
Was Ys II patched when you finished Ys I? It likely was due to Ys II still being this 1.2.4.0 version. If indeed you had it already patched, then it's the fault of that dumb launcher sometimes not working or the folder names are different. I might need more information on the default installation folders. If you could give me the installation folder tree the Falcom installer sets up, that'd be great. Even better, when you get the EXEs from the DVD, get the Falcom.INF file which is at the folder root. That will tell me what I need to know.

Anyway, your patching problem with this new Falcom version will be fixed in the next patch release. Problem is I still need someone to edit some bitmaps before I do another maintenance update for the game, so who knows when that'll be.

"The data file wasnt found or the capacity of external memory is insufficient."

I can no longer play either english or Japanese versions... (?) I guess what I am confused about is 1) which 'data file' wasn't found, and 2) just what 'external memory' is this message referring to?

Try following these instructions on installing it manually I left in the ReadMe:

Quote
* Installing Ys Complete manually (The only way for Win9X/ME)

Make a folder tree named FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN somewhere on
your hard drive - C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN for example. Next,
goto your Ys Complete CD or DVD and copy everything in YS1_WIN
(for the LE version) or YS1_CMP (if you've got the XP version)
MINUS the 'save' subfolder. The trick is to avoid that 'save'
subfolder which has a Japanese encoded text file in it and thus
will interrupt a whole copying operation even in explorer (occurs
in Win98 especially). So, now on your hard drive you've got
 something like:

 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\*.*
 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\YS1_WIN.EXE
 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\DATA\*.*
 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\MIDI\*.*
 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\*.*
 C:\FALCOM\YS12_CMP\YS1_WIN\WAVE\WAVE_44\*.*

Etc. Got it? Good. About the 'wave' folder: If you have the 2
CD Limited Edition set, you'll also have to get the 2nd CD and
continue copying from that. Otherwise, in order to have wave
playback in the game, you'll always have to have the 2nd (Game)
CD inserted or mounted. You're basically doing a FULL install
by copying all the waves to disk. By doing this, you can also
take advantage of the alternate soundtrack that's recently been
released by Psycho DeuceBag, FYI. Anyhow, that should do it. Just run
my patcher after that and you're all set, ya heathen...

The DATA.YS file that it is referring to should be in the YS1_WIN\data subfolder. Also, it should be 76,444,582 bytes. You basically have not copied all the files correctly if the patcher cannot find this file under the YS1_WIN subfolder. That's the likely problem. You weren't successful at patching actually, cause that Engrish message of "The data file wasnt found or the capacity of external memory is insufficient." would be different cause the patch actually changes it. Be sure you're using this patch btw, YsI(US)v126.exe.

I remember when you used to post on the RPGFan boards.
Ah, hehe. No kidding, eh? I stopped going there cause I got tired of the angsty atmosphere of the kids there, you know.

Anyway, glad Mike got your problem fixed. Now, did you buy the new Ys I & II Complete package from Falcom? You have a previously unknown Ys II version that the patch isn't familiar with. I guess I should've just forced it to check if greater than or equal 1.1.2.0, etc. I can easily fix this, but I'd still like to know where you got the game you have.

Version information compiled with the patch is as follows:

1.0.x.x : Ys II Eternal - This means you've got the old "ETERNAL" release of the game and the patch is useless.

1.1.2.0 : Ys II Complete regular (ysc0107.zip)

1.1.3.0 : Ys II Complete for Radeon graphics cards (ysc0203.zip)

1.1.4.0 : Ys II Complete XP - The newer separate release of the game

1.2.4.0 : That's yours... but... ?????? Where'd it come from??? The recent Ys I & II Complete repackaging??

What happens is, if it's not any of the previously mentioned version numbers, minus your new one, I provide you with the warning that you received, "1.2.4.0 is unknown... This patch cannot help you.", etc. Anyway, I'd also appreciate if you could attach that 1.2.4.0 executable in a post here cause I'd like to look at it.

847
Hey Jest, if you could zip up both YS1_WIN.EXE and YS2_WIN.EXE from the CD/DVD discs and attach them to a post here, I would appreciate it. I wanna take a look at those new executables since after reading your post about problems with patching, it appears they are of a newer version.

Ys VI: The Ark of Napishtim / RE: Translation?
« on: Jan. 23, 2006, 11:07:40 PM »
Uh, well, you know, the reason I made this specific forum is because I am working on it again, otherwise, yeah, there would be no point to having this very forum... ;)

Anyhow, yes, it was killed off way back due to two main factors: One factor was that the Korean hacker who shared his hacking knowledge with me was handed a cease and desist order. He had to get his father's lawyer to deal with the situation as painless as possible.

The other was that we in fact were getting our wish: Konami noticed the Ys series and decided to throw a bone to Ys fans by picking up Ys VI and localizing it for the US. What Psycho DeuceBag and I held in our hands was the power to affect Konami's sales given that many fans would prefer the easy route of pirating the PC version and just applying our potential patch. So, given those two reasons, we dropped the project and moved on. If Konami hadn't bought the rights, we would've continued right on.

Where am I now? Well, given that the US port has sold more than all the likely units it'll sell in N. America, I figure it'd be OK to continue with the project eventually.

So yeah, that's whole story on that.

Oh, if you haven't already seen this, here's a little teaser Gillian made:

Ys I & II Complete / RE: Utility to loop Ys I&II Complete music?
« on: Jan. 25, 2006, 01:51:11 AM »
Haha. I'll think about releasing the utility later perhaps. There isn't anything else to use; it's custom Falcom work.

It's always funny to see my nick spelled nightwolf. Nice way to identify a Mortal Kombat fan or just someone familiar with the game. In your case though, you had two chances to see it how I spell it, but missed them both...

One was, "With the assistance of a utility made by NightWolve," and the other is if you look at the top logo, it's right there like this, "(NightWolve)". Yet, you still went with "nightwolf." ;) Thus, because of this, I still refuse to release the utility. :P

Xak III: The Eternal Recurrence / RE: How is Xak III?
« on: Jan. 27, 2006, 04:57:15 PM »
Well, I wouldn't have paid that much for it. $20 USD would be my price for it new, but it's ebay so you're dealt with whatever happens. I got DraculaX for $85 new back in the day. That's $25 more than what you paid for that and given the two games, to me, I couldn't justify $60 for such an old game like Xak III.

If you check my WIP Xak3 page, you'll find I now have 8 pages of screenshots (6 images per page) to give the audience some more eye candy, finally. That's more than I've ever had, and I even added 3 more for Ys IV. I should've had that many in the past to have helped showcase its quality.

Anyhow, that might help and also, here's a review, although the guy's English isn't all that great:

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys / RE: Vote for your favorite version of Ys IV!
« on: Feb. 12, 2006, 04:35:38 PM »
Really, I wouldn't wait for the dubs. I have no idea what Justus is doing now. He was around not too recently and showed us his dubbing work for Radiant Silvergun, but now I dunno.

You're missing out on a fine game for something that may never happen. I'd go ahead and play it. In fact, I'm gonna release a patch update for the script that I was holding off on cause I wanted to wait till the dubs came along. I've decided not to hold off any longer. Expect version .96 very soon, which will change spellings such as "Romn" back to "Romun." It's just spelling corrections and I'll probably redesign the ReadMe. Would be fun to maybe make a new patcher, but I doubt I'll fit that in this time.

Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys / RE: Vote for your favorite version of Ys IV!
« on: Jan. 23, 2006, 11:22:35 PM »
"Ys IV: The Dawn of Ys" hands down. I once tried playing the crappy patch Shimarisu did for the SNES version and it is just simply terrible. TERRIBLE!!!! Maybe it is a decent game, but you certainly won't be able to tell until that translation patch is entirely revamped, which incidentally, I hear Ghideon Zhi does plan on doing some time in the future.

I never finished the game I started BTW; I couldn't manage to force myself to finish it off. I tried again a while back, but it had been so long that I put off continuing, I got stuck and didn't know what to do next. Course, I didn't feel like starting over, so that was that...

I would have to see where I am by the year's end. After Felghana and Ys VI, I dunno if I'll take on anything new. It'll all depend if I get my real life career back on track and take care of some other things to free up some time. The same goes for Psycho DeuceBag since assuming if I did pick a new Falcom project I wanted to work on, say Xanadu Next or ED6, I would have to get him interested and motivated in it. So that's your other uncertainty. Of course, that did work in reverse with Felghana since he convinced me to hack it because he was so eager to have a crack at translating the script, so I had to take advantage of his willingness and enthusiasm at the time even though I wanted to work on a home bathroom remodeling project I'm still in the middle of. But anyhow, as it stands right now, he's mostly taking a break from things.

I'm surprised anyone's still interested in those. Btw, did you ever play the very first Wizardry for NES? Man, I bought a guide book for that way back along with the game. I spent a huge amount of hours with it... In the end, I sold it and the book off to a pawn shop.

You mean the ones for the PC-Engine? If so, nah, since a) I don't have the time (even if I was interested), b) I'm not interested; and c) I doubt I could find a translator who would be interested either. =\

To be clear, I will just be working on the new Falcom projects I've made individual forums for only (Ys VI + Felghana).

Just one question, in case I misread something:  Night, you're going to finish the PC translations of both Ys -The Ark of Napishtim- AND Ys -The Oath in Felghana- ?!?  If that's really the case, you've just made my day.  Excuse me if I sound giddy, but this is great news for me.

That's correct, as is evident by the site and forums.

Good to see you're back btw.

For being the first poster, I've added to your reputation. =) But yeah, although the patch is way off, it is planned for release; the game happens to completely hacked incidentally.
