Eh, not so much. It is occasionally hilarious because it can be taken completely out of context. Suits my personality, really. I'm the type of guy to make up dialog for Japanese games I can't read. My buddies and I decided that Ys Felghana was really about Adol trying to get the king's superfly hat and Chester had sworn to defend it.

Oh, so you vote to get rid of it altogether at the top?

Sent by Raigan on Mar. 04, 2007, 09:59:52 PM[ Delete ]

It does seem rather strange when it cuts off in the middle of the sentence. However, it's also a bit odd to have a lengthy discourse posted in boldface at the top of the page. It's usually nonsensical anyway until you start parsing through the shoutbox... It's a matter of preference I suppose.

Nah, it's just the overflow issue which is somewhat irritating when it takes the last shout and displays it at the top of the page.

is this thing dead?

Sent by NightWolve on Mar. 03, 2007, 10:07:05 AM[ Delete ]

Think I should I do something about this Shouts feature where it trims the last shout to like 256-512 characters or so before displaying it at the top of every page?

aah, just remembered one rather obscure one, in the arcade game "the Crystal Of Kings" if you go into the bios, in the software dip settings, you can change a setting that controls the amount of blood in the game... the highest setting is "REAL(many blood)" and this bright red caution sign pops up in the middle of the screen and says "--CAUTION-- Included Cruel Expression" when you select it. I laughed my ass off the first time I saw that Grin Oh yeah, and the SNK engrish is classic, but I dont think it holds a candle to Darius Gaiden, I'll see if I can get a transcript of one of them, but out of context without the graphic it might not be as good, maybe I'll just start an engrish forum topic and put up a snapshot Smiley

This isn't really Engrish, but I personally found one the best video game dialogue funnies to come from the X-Men arcade game from Magneto, the final boss. Somehow the two taunts that Magneto has can sometimes overlap in interesting ways as he shouts out: "I WILL KILL YOU! NOW YOU DIE! HAHAHAHAHA!"

Gets me everytime I hear it. : )

If you want Engrish, SNK is the only way to go. Sonic Wings 3/Aero Fighters 3 is host to some of the best ever. Samurai Shodown II is a classic, of course... but Magical Drop Pocket is host to such gems as "I hate a rude like you! Be dead!"

An YsO patch is going to be a long time in the making and you can thank pirates for that, but mostly it'll be due to the loss of my free time. I do have a different plan of distribution when I get to that point - It'll be sold only to those that first run a utility to validate that they're in posession of an original disc. So, only if you bought the game will you get to enjoy the privilege of playing it in English from me. Possibly a 2 (or more) step process to ensure someone with a pirated copy is excluded entirely from the start. This will take quite a bit of development time as well as dealing with other issues like setting up a more automated selling/payment system. The Felghana freebie patch will be the last of its kind.

Anyway, I'm not giving a time table of a year or more, or whatever. It'll depend if my situation becomes more stable this year. I have more important things to do right now which can't wait any longer. Let's just get Felghana over with and not worry about pestering me for something else.

As for Engrish examples in gaming, I found one pretty amusing. In the game over screen of "Download" for the PCE, which is a Japanese game you have the phrase: "Mission Incomplete. Shit, is this not a great beginning."

Big Buck: Actually, I shouldn't say that. At one time, I thought about finding a job in the video game industry (I'd say due to Squaresoft fanboyism), but I think I came to realize it was just a fool's dream, and add to that, there's more money in other parts of the IT/Computer Science field anyhow without that level of intensity that is needed to go into game creation. The fan translation hobby though sort of let's me entertain that old ambition in a sense.

raddbgt: I hope this month it can be finished. You'll know when it's going public because you'll see a big image at the top of this site along with a countdown clock. When the countdown is up, THEN you'll find it in the Downloads section.

Big Buck: No, I never considered creating a new game from scratch. This is enough work as it is. I don't need even more. Heh.

My vote for best engrish in a videogame definitely has to go to Darius Gaiden: The Silver Hawk. The endings have some of the most hilarious examples of engrish I've ever witnessed, the one with the furry e-wok looking fukkers is especially hilarious. Grin

Hey Nightwolve...I was just sitting here playing through YsF and wondering if you had ever considered creating your own game from scratch. Something similar to the great rpgs of the 90s. Ys series, zelda, crystalis.

To all that doubt to donate for The Oath in Felghana ENGLISH PATCH are missing something that I haven’t had in a long time with a YS game – that is fun – I’m almost half way throw the game and I can’t put it down – the control is perfect. NightWolve deserves it for the hard work. Grin
