I'm around as well. I check back about once a week or so. Just got Ys I and II chronicles for PSP and I'm liking it. Wish they used some parts of Atlus' translation from the DS game, but some of the new writing is funny (there's a reference to a Hall and Oates song in the beginning of Ys I that amused me)

Felghana Patch "Release" Anniversary! A 5 year milestone reached after 10 years!

** Part I: The Leaker (Part II below deals with YOU, Ys F.A.N.s)

It's that time of year again! Yay! I've been saving something special for this year's anniversary of the leak. I want you to meet someone: The Leaker, Jack Schroder. Let's retrace the event: On Sunday, January 21, 2007 1:10 PM, he donated the bare minimum of $5 bucks with a paypal account (which is of course one of the ways I filtered it down to him, it had to be the cheapest donator; the leaker wouldn't be someone that donated $20 let's say, most likely anyway). The thing is the name on the paypal account is John Schroeder, a relative, his father if I'm not mistaken, so when I one day got the idea to search the email address tied to that paypal account on facebook, it brought me to a Jack Schroeder. Long story short, I said a little hello to him, next thing I know, he starts shutting down all public info on his facebook profile. He blocks my account, I make another, I say hello again and mention that I can still publicly see his friends list, so then he makes that private too! Heh-heh! How did I track it to down him, though? I contacted that email address and the GayFAQs GF_Alt account

http://www.facebook.com/jackschroeder (First disabled, now deleted or changed, but not before I a picture though)

Also, his GF (apparently), Jessica Fey: http://www.facebook.com/jessfey
Minnesota Alum '06

Freddie Schroeder - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=24700512

Yvie Schroeder - http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?ref=sgm&id=1654350120

I was thinking of contacting everybody I got a link for and telling them what he did. If I can't a) prosecute in a court of law and bring him to justice, or b) get to him, I could at least get him people around him to think less of him, especially his GF, to see what a criminal fuckup/asshole that the guy is. I never got around to it though.

Ys IV Dubbing Project Revival

** January 17, 2012

Wow, that's 2 years later that this post gets updated! Things sure do move REAL slow around here, don't they? Anyway, suffice to say, the Ys IV dubbing project has never gone anywhere each time it's been tried - it's the one thing I wanted SOMEBODY ELSE to do, so naturally it NEVER gets done! Finally, I got to thinking and decided to take a few moments the other day to package/release what I call the "Ys IV Dub Kit" after the subject recently came up in a MagicEngine thread. I promised a fella named Arjak to one day provide him with the tools necessary (which was probably about a year ago - I seemingly tend to deal in years these days with my timelines, not months, etc. Heh.) to do the project himself, and I think the Ys IV Dub Kit, which is attached to this post for anyone to download, should be enough provided you know enough about software related to audio recordings. I've attached two mp3's for fun; they're two actresses that did some takes for Bammi and Lilia. As they were never finished, they're worthless, but nonetheless, I've included them for the hell of it.

Quick info/instructions on the Ys IV Dub Kit:
1)  You need an ISO/WAV/CUE image file set of an Ys IV disc. You can use my nifty TurboRip tool to make one. I made a hasty patched version to allow it to work on Vista, so download/use that if it doesn't work. Here's the link: http://www.ysutopia.net/forums/index.php?topic=69.msg3668#msg3668
2)  Copy the Ys IV Dub Kit zip file in the same folder as the Ys IV image file set, extract all contents and rename track 2 to "YsIV-02.iso". You'll have to update the CUE file to reflect that change.
3)  I have included some English dubbed ADPCM clips with the Dub Kit. They are of Karna and a few others. If you double click "YS4_GET_WAVE_FROM_ADPCM.bat" they will be converted to WAVE and you can listen to them. If you double click "YS4_PUT_ADPCM_INTO_ISO.bat", that will insert these few clips into the ISO and if you mount the CUE, load the game in the MagicEngine emulator, you can get to the point in the game and listen to them. The Karna stuff is your best bet; it's at the point where she beats up those 2 white soldiers and also when you get captured, are in jail and she shows up to break you out, that part will be in English, etc.
4)  Double clicking on the "YS4_GET_WAVE_FROM_ADPCM.bat" batch file will extract ALL ADPCM audio clips and auto-convert them to regular WAVE files, so now you can listen to everything! There are 232 total ADPCM clips that are in need of redubbing. Only about ~15 of 'em are actually recorded with background music. Most clips have no background music so the voice actor just needs to do his/her recording in a quiet room with a good microphone and proper recording software.

* The Great Merry “Fuck You!” (Better late than never)

Recap: Christmas 2004, I gave you the “Ys IV: Dawn of Ys” patch and you happily took it. Christmas 2006, I gave you an incomplete Felghana patch per donation as part of an early-access program, something I first used with the “Ys II Complete” patch the year before. This limited donationware program, designed to be temporary and as a way to avoid a permanent/difficult payware model, lasted for some ~4 weeks; it was cut short on January 29, 2007 when the patch was leaked on GayFAQs, much to the delight of a great many disgusting pieces of excrement out there who then happily took/spread it by the thousands (tens of thousands to-date, ~50,000++). My estimate as to the financial damages/losses was around $1000-$1500 based on, a) the respectable donation frequency prior to the leak, and b) how many more weeks the program had left... Evidently, 4 weeks was too much for you cheap, freeloading, warez fucks to handle, for something that you were “supposed” to get 100% free anyway, cause yeah, that's how things are “supposed” to work (per the leaker's lecture). The very idea simply short-circuited your natural free-for-me entitlement complex in this context. You're supposed to get the completed patch, and I'm supposed to get nothing - That's how things work; that's the most moral and proper outcome, purty simple... You wouldn't wanna spoil me, right? So obviously, the mistake was on my part in daring to ask butt-pirates for money - I see that now... Asking Ys “fanholes” (read: videogame thieves) for money is kinda like going up to beggars/panhandlers on the corner and asking them for some spare change (before they get a chance to ask you)... Pretty dumb and you wouldn't be surprised when 99.99% of 'em tell you to fuck off, which is the same percentage result I ultimately got in this context. I have been naïve at times, I will admit.

Present: So here we are towards the end of the Christmas 2010 season and I thought to myself, hey, I've neglected my lovely Ys “fanholes” for 4 years, I should come up with something to give 'em... BUT WHAT ?? What can I come up with that would be appropriate and on such short notice? Then it dawned on me as to exactly the kind of gift that you deserve, THE ONLY ONE I ever should've been giving you in the first place! I got the idea from...YOU!!! This Christmas, I'm giving you back that which 99% of you have been giving me for some 7-8 years! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you...the middle finger! *MY* middle finger to be precise! <Mark Levin>THHAAAAAAAT'S RRRRIGHT!</Mark Levin> Today, I finally flip you the bird proper, and I wanted to do it in such a way that I hope you'll ALWAYS remember me by! I am returning the gesture to the source... I'm a memorable figure, I'd like to think (and you freaks do love talking about me – I give meaning to your otherwise worthless lives apparently), and as such I wanna leave you miserable, disgusting bastards with a long-lasting memory... My feelings towards you are now visually official for all time! ;) I want the image of my middle finger imprinted in your stupid birdbrains the next time you're ranting and raving about me behind my back (I'm looking at you, Spinner_8, among many others – you disgusting, two-faced, bald, butt-ugly, bastard – yeah, kinda saw your facebook picture, I did)... If I can achieve that, I'll be a happy man.

(Yes indeed, that's my actual right hand in front of my Felghana Limited Edition box, along with other neighboring Ys originals. That's the hand and the box that gave birth to the Felghana patch that you pirate-happy fucks (meaning 99% of you) got to enjoy... Hey, this picture's a collector's item I'd say; I even signed it for ya too! What do you think?? LOL)

Some of you dumbfucks can be found even today ranting about “viruses in my patches” and my evilness for doing so... For fucks sake, lemme spell it out for you stupid, butt-pirating assclowns: that was nothing more than anti-warez propaganda and you fucks bought it all hook, line, and sinker...! The sad fact is EVERY single one of you fucks got away with your thievery, EVERY ONE, including the leaker... I never got ANY form of justice which would only ever have been directed at the leaker gang anyway... Has someone ever raised their hand to say that their computer got fucked by one of my patches? NO, but yet the belief is still out there... It's either a testament to the effectiveness of my propaganda 4 years later or to the IQ/intelligence level of Ys “fanholes...” Which do you think it is ?? I mean, I don't think I tried very hard when I was playing along with that bitchy ass bitch, FrayedHoped, the little GayFAQs jackass that was so certain my ambiguous phrase of “special surprise” meant “fuck up your PC” if caught using a pirated copy of the game. Stupid fucking sorry thieves, what a complete fucking disgusting disaster you all are and you only seem to grow more miserable... If you pirate without any kind of restraint, without regard, whatever and whenever, you shouldn't be as miserable as say I am, now should you? Go fucking steal something else, enjoy it, and shut the fuck up!

Anyway, Merry Christmas, fanholes, and a Happy New Year too!!! :-) Congratulations are in order as well; you've achieved a sustained 99% freeloading rate as of late (~1% up from 97-98%)! Kick ass! The notion that [nearly] “everybody loves free” has been vindicated...

Announcements
XSEED Games (PSP Felghana, Ys 7, etc.)

I'm very, very late in posting this update, but I had a few moments and an Internet connection to spare today, so it's about damn time! You might've heard the news that a company called XSEED licensed rights to bring "Ys: The Oath in Felghana" to the US for the PSP... True enough! But you also might've heard that they used the translated script from the PC patch that Deuce and I produced back in '07... Well, believe it or not... hell yes, it's fact! I can't point to much precedent for this, so it's truly a historic, unbelieveable event! Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that something like this would happen way back in 2001 when I first began fan translation work... Now I've seen it all when it comes to this.

For me, it's historic for another reason because I was privy to witnessing things going in the opposite direction. I don't talk about it often, but there was a Korean hacker back when Falcom released Ys VI for the PC. He helped me with source code for the Falcom engine (still used for Felghana and Ys Origin) and I owed a great deal to him. Unfortunately, while he was hacking Ys VI to bring a Korean translation patch, a company actually licensed it and shut him down! It ended with a cease and desist, and luckily his father was a lawyer and handled the paperwork/dealings with the representatives of said company - didn't have to pay him. He was also ordered to destroy all his work, but some of it having been handed off to me, it lives on in the leaked Felghana patch, spread around daily, installed by butt-pirating thievin' douchebags the world over. Nice little story to tell the kids one day. ;) Luckily he listened to butt-pirates and intended on releasing a perfectly free patch with no strings attached whatsoever; had he not, well, you know, they would've really nailed him... Cause then his attempts at producing an unauthorized translation would've actually been illegal... I believe GayFAQs said it best and I'm paraphrasing here, "There's a reason why you don't take legal advice from pirates..."

Anyway, so yeah, there you have it - Some GOOD, unexpected history was made for a change! I've travelled on this road for a long time and I have a lot of pride in having been around long enough to see something like this occur, but this work came at a tremendous cost for me (that and Ys "fanholes" mainly) so I think "fading into the sunset" is probably official as far as I'm concerned. I still can't bring myself to delete all of my legacy work when it comes to patches - I thought about it at times, wanting to completely free myself of it all, so I guess that means I'll one day consider returning... It's been hard to decide - I've gone back'n'forth on this question so many times: why risk 99% of you freeloading freaks that bottomfed off of me for so many years getting to enjoy something new if I can't 100% guarantee that it'd not fall into your warez hands?? Exe encryption would provide several months of protection, sure, better than the 4 weeks I got with the Felghana patch, but given the massive amount of work protecting such software entails, it's just not worth it as I later found. So ultimately, it's better that you bastards continue to be denied anything new from me. You @ssholes can go buy something official now anyway, right? Cause we all now how eager you are to pay for something...

Personally, since I know you Ys "fans" so well, I never would've voted to license Felghana for the states if I had a say in the matter! Just as a pure business decision, I would predict a financial loss and could not justify doing it, no matter how much of a Ys fanboy I am... Ys "fans" are good for a lot of things: freeloading, pirating, bitching, backstabbing, slandering and at times in a two-faced cowardly fashion, etc. but opening their wallets is SURE AS HELL NOT one of them; that covers just about 99% of your behavior in my experience (oh yes, the totality in donations versus freeloading is no longer at a 2-3% range given the explosion of Felghana patch installations the last 2 years - it's ~1% these days)...

Felghana Patch "Release" Anniversary! Yaay! It's been 3 years!

Man, time sure flies by, doesn't it ? I neglected to come online this Jan. 29th (which was two Fridays ago) to properly commemorate the day (January 29, 2007 3:21 PM PT) that my unfinished Felghana patch was leaked... How annoying! It's become a tradition for me curiously enough and I almost didn't make time for it. *sniff* Better late than never as I always say!

Well, there she is in action, my preciousss... 3 years and counting, even despite a broken Falcom patch link, and it STILL keeps on patching nearly EVERY DAY for any warez-happy freeloading asshole (AKA Ys "fan"), the poor thing, but it's got a little attitude problem though, eh? Wonder where it got that from... Heh-heh.

You heard right BTW, ever since it was "released" 3 years ago and continues to make its way around the world, it's installed DAILY (~5-15 installations a day!), a fun fact I'll go into more further down. So even as I'm typing this, right now, some a-hole somewhere just finished his torrent download of Felghana and got done running the patch. I do not exaggerate! Purty awesome, doncha think, it spreading like a virus nonstop ?? I suppose one can consider this a "successful" patch, *THE* most successful patch I produced in fact, that is, if your gauging is purely on the basis of daily, worldwide consumption.

Now, I know a few of you noticed my little message feature but probably weren't aware that I began randomizing different "messages" a few months back. ;) Gotta have at least a little fun with my awesomely spoiled, shitty Ys "fans," ya know ? Incidentally, if you can come up with an "entertaining" (let's say) message, feel free to send it my way - if it's good, I'll add it to the list. It'd have to be 78 characters long so that it fits on one line.

So yeah, it's been 3 years since an unfinished Felghana patch was leaked on GameFAQs in order to "end my greedy donation-ransom scheme" as it were, costing me anywhere from $1000-$1500... Didn't take you lousy fucktards long to go right back to your freeloading once it got loose the way that it did, that's for sure (you know who you are!). Looking back, I'm not sure if it was proper to consider it an ALPHA or BETA now that I think about it (always went with BETA though), but it definitely wasn't a release candidate (RC) - douchebags made that choice for me, sorry to say. Basically, it was almost finished; it needed some script updates, minor improvements for external image loading, and was simply missing some Mural images pertaining to a part of the game in the Abandoned Mine. Nothing major and it was on track to being finished up late February or early March 2007 (a few more weeks, tops), that is, until the leak of course...

Those of you that were around know the story, ...

EDIT IN PROGRESS.

Look what someone got for Christmas '09!

Fast forward to about 7 minutes into this video to see. =)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRdUzZzZ8A0" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vRdUzZzZ8A0</a>

Coincidentally, this is the second time this week I've seen someone get to open and show off an original copy of it in a youtube video. This baby goes back to before I even got the idea of fan-translating PC games... It's ~9 years old or so... Few and far between are those with the privilege and pride of owning it.
