I must say I feel sorry for you Night Wolf, all the effort put into creating this patch and people would not support it for some pocket change donation. I recommend you collect donation ahead of time, before releasing a patch. If you do the next patch you should have a poll (who wants it) and donation collection ahead of time for dose that truly wants your work. In this case both the true fan and the translator win.

and thats why we love you Deuce

Usually, they don't. At least not in the same fashion. There is no direct translation to Japanese for the expression "What the hell" or the like. When a character speaks roughly, they use crude speech patterns to get the point across.

"Joudan ja nee!" is not the kind of thing one would say in polite conversation, and would garner you about the same reaction as "You gotta be shittin' me!" would in polite English conversation.

It's slang speech. If I translated it all "cleanly," every character would sound the same in English. One has to take context into account, or else you wind up with very bland dialogue.

Sent by zaratus on Apr. 08, 2007, 12:49:36 AM[ Delete ]

Hmm, in that case, I wonder how vulgarities get translated from English to Japanese then...

Oh my, I see now. Sorry zaratus, the first few parts did blind me. xP

Still, "Ya gotta be shitting me" was a bit overdone, I think. ;P Even w/ Deuce's explanation. There could be something else to use...?
Anyway, it's fine.

Sent by Deuce on Apr. 06, 2007, 11:14:16 AM[ Delete ]

Well, one thing to remember is that there really is no "profanity" in Japanese, or at least, not in the sense that English speakers tend to think of it. It's typically just levels of politeness. Generally speaking, most words that are often translated as profanity are merely extremely rude ways of saying "you."

"Kisama" and "onore" both mean "you," but are often used as interjections, and in such respects, they tend to get translated as "bastard/bitch" and "damn you," respectively.

"Chikushou" literally means "bird" or "beast." The original meaning is generally just a common word for livestock.

The only real analog between the two languages is "kuso," which means "shit" in a quite literal sense, and is used the same was (but only as a noun and an interjection). The perception of it is different, and is regarded about as severely as "crap" is in America. Not exactly a nice word, but not something that would get you run out of town on a rail, either. Commonly used by people of all ages.

If memory serves (it has been a while), the original line was "joudan ja nee!" or the like... literally "not a joke!" Contextually, it's used as an expression of disbelief, as in, "You've got to be kidding!" Given Dogi's rough speech, "You gotta be shittin' me!" was an easy transition.

Never fear... there will be no FF7 Cids in any Ys game I translate, unless a character really is that crass.

Sent by zaratus on Apr. 05, 2007, 03:34:54 AM[ Delete ]

Hmm, yeah, that was one thing I was going to say in the last shout, but I guess during editing of the post it got removed, something along the lines of being curious as to what Dogi says in the original version. For all we know, it could have been something fairly harsh in japanese. *shrug*

Epona from Ys Origin is supposed to be fairly coarse as well, from what Deuce said, when he was teasing people regarding how he's handling her translation. Tongue

Sent by NightWolve on Apr. 05, 2007, 12:27:48 AM[ Delete ]

Yup, that's an actual line. I had some reservations with a fouled-mouth Dogi myself cause I always felt Ys to be a clean game overall when it came to language, but I took a liking to it in the end. Oh but wait, did you mean literally? You'll have to ask Deuce.

As for the April Fools gag, just click on a link anywhere on this site 3 times and a session cookie will block it from showing up for the duration that your browser remains open.

Sent by zaratus on Apr. 05, 2007, 12:25:26 AM[ Delete ]

Gah! I do think it's time to at least turn the shaking off. Weird though, sometimes it doesn't do the shakes. *shrug*

X-Calibar - Yes. Yes he does. And within the first two minutes. Dogi doesn't get a lot of screentime though, and I think that's the harshest line Dogi speaks in the game anyway.

Red Hairdo - yeah, you definitely misinterpreted what I wrote. I guess I didn't use quite enough hyperbole. What with the claiming I spent $700 on a monitor, yet pirated Oath in Felghana, claiming NightWolves shaky shaky of the webpage broke my monitor. And then there's the occasional use of the !!!1111 sort of punctuation, but I ended up not keeping up with it for the whole post. Though, I *DID* put a few 'big' words in there that your average NightWolve basher wouldn't use. =P And it was also a combination of just about every complaint I've seen come up about NightWolve on various places. In fact, most of that comes from a thread of GameFAQs. The complaining starts off early, when people realize that donators got the patch first, and progresses from there when people start hearing that he's putting anti-piracy measures in the patch. I tried to include little bits of all the complaints I remembered about, including bits about malicious code, doing it for the fans, greedy, etc...

Oh, and the people who to this day, still think the person hacking the game, is the person that knows Japanese and translated it themselves too, which most of the time, is not the case. And then for some reason, they start busting on Gideon Zhi, of AGTP fame, and I've never seen any reason anywhere for people to not like him. *shrug*

But, yeah. I was just faking. I've been mostly lurking around here for a while, don't post overly frequently, unless I have something to add, for the most part. I think my first visits to one of NightWolve's sites was back when the Ys I Complete patches were being released. I definitely remember looking at the screenshots and wanting the game.

And guess I didn't have to worry about killing the shoutbox, as NightWolve went on MUCH longer than I did.

So, uh, sorry for any confusion. Wink

And NightWolve - There's plenty of reason to look forward to a final release for Felghana. CD-checks aside (not that they're a worry), at the very least, it'll be nice to throw a big "I TOLD YOU SO!" in the faces of all the nay-sayers. But, just watch, they'll still bitch about something.

Uhm, did I really misunderstamd him? Oh, now it's too late.

Visa/MasterCard. The same for Wii's Virtual Console games too, heh. I'll try to donate you 5 bucks or so (in my country's currency, that's about 11, which is not much anyway...). Just don't expect very soon for it, but I'll do it eventually.

Btw, are you and Deuce working on ORIGIN afterall? I think I saw Deuce posting something about it in Sel's board. That's awesome. (I suggest you make it ShareWare btw, like I said).

Sent by NightWolve on Apr. 04, 2007, 03:08:33 PM[ Delete ]

Oh, you misunderstood zaratus. He was just characterizing/mocking their "perspective." Read his final paragraphs; he didn't mean his initial comments. Also, donating only requires a Credit Card, VISA/MASTERCARD, same as what one would use to buy the game from Falcom...

Sent by Red Hairdo on Apr. 04, 2007, 03:00:49 PM[ Delete ]

NightWolve, don't care for that loser. 80% Human beings sucks btw (and I'm probably one of those...)

Anyway, I'll confess you I never donated you even a cent. But you deserve, say, countless hundred of dollar, honestly. Your patches are better than any finished product from a REAL, big company! (And you know that.)

My point is, even though I never donated to you (mostly due to my age...I don't have a bank account or anything, so asking for someone older than me to donate to you is a bit complicated. But I can do it if I really want), I still approve your idea: make the patches ShareWare. I don't want to see you thinking EVERYBODY is a retard like that "zaratus" character there. And to prove you I'm not lying or trying to "be false and friendly" with you, I suggest you make the patches ShareWare. At least for ORIGIN (that if you are going to hack it...), because unfortunatelly the leaked-patch-users won't pay for the final version...(but you can do what you thikn it's best, ShareWare or FreeWare for that one.)
By the way, I didn't download the leaked patch...even when I could. (Actually I never played OiF)
I'm just waiting for the finished and oficially released product (free or not), even if I gotta wait more 3 years.

I didn't mean for this to be long. Sorry. =p I just wanted to let (or remember) you know there are people who is not that ungrateful (though most people are...). I hope I could write something at least a bit useful. =/

PS: If that jerk below there replies to me, probably I'll let him be. Cheesy

Ah, but see, the Felghana patch is by far the most valuable and precious one than anything I've ever created in the past. Much more greedy and envious eyes were laid upon it as opposed to when I was preparing to launch the finished version of Ys II Complete. Though, I can't say I predicted this much of a problem.

I really did want to be finished by now because it would've been perfect for my schedule, but to basically have proceeded as if nothing happened after the incident you're well aware of was not possible. I no longer cared about the patch so much as I cared about tracking a certain individual that you're also well aware of. There were other days when I was inches away from deleting this entire site to free myself from the responsibilities it has entangled me into for so many years after realizing I've been doing it for mostly worthless dumbfucks who I couldn't stand to be around for any length of time. Commitments at that point already having been made with Deuce, the love of Ys and not allowing it to die because of some random fucking cretin made me decide otherwise, though. I didn't wanna see Felghana end with an incomplete patch; most especially not in this manner.

It's funny those enjoying the leaked version claim greed as if they're even in a credible position to decide how much my labor across ~3 years is worth. More supreme ignorance and basically sidetracking the issue of the leaker who succeeded in his mission. How can they not be aware of that fact? It's merely a cheap ploy. They're in possession of a leaked copy. What, they think this didn't have an effect on incoming donations? The initial respectable frequency of donations died off long ago. They slowed to a crawl since early February. Every major pirating network that this WAREZ faction is aware of has been hosting said leaked copy... Pffft. Very few have incentive to donate now, although a few occasionally do at a rate of ~3-4 weekly. Possibly unaware of the leak in so doing.

So basically, they fucked me over pretty good; I've been robbed in hundreds of dollars worth in lost donations given the way the leak affected the incoming donation frequency within days, and at the same time, I'm supposed get the final version ready for them as soon as possible... Heh. You gotta love that...

Another distraction that I guess is supposed to put me on the defensive even after having fucked me over is that I'm really plotting to permanently sell the final version after all. Another ploy and you can tell because of how utterly stupid that notion is. I surrendered the idea that came to mind for a permanent "shareware" modeled patch after I handed the first random donator a nearly 98% completed freeware modeled patch with zero protection, etc. Let alone 50 donators at that point having been given it by the time the leak occured. If the leak didn't occur, I still had given it out to about ~50 people at that point, so the idea that after I finished I'd switch to shareware and expect 50 people to keep that freeware modeled patch contained forever is utterly fucking ridiculous... I obviously had given up on the idea from the moment I gave the patch to the very first donator.

Just as I said in my main site post, originally, maybe around Dec 20th, I looked at what I had created and said to myself, "What kind of a moron hands this caliber of a patch out for free, to what mostly have been ingrates anyway?" It felt stupid in every way to me. I've built myself up for years to get this point, I sacrificed more than I've ever felt comfortable publicly sharing, and here I was about to hand it out for free, then be left at the mercy of the usual 10-30 donators, mostly close friends. At any rate, I felt I just didn't have the time to deal with a shareware model, so I gave up on the idea. I decided to once again go for the "early-access-for-donations" model as I did for Ys II Complete. Thus, instead of having to spend that many more months to prepare for selling it, all that time would go to just finish it up possibly by February. That WAS the way things were looking... But, then the leak happened which changed things a tad... The incentive to donate was mostly gone and my incentive to finish went with it, for a while anyway. Initially though, I frantically tried to finish, but the research that I had to do because of the leaker and for his behalf was going too slow. I spent at least one week reorganizing my email list to at least pinpoint a range of possible suspects. Then there were the days where I felt it was all pointless, that I should just delete the site and get back to my remodeling project which is what really needs to be finished up, etc.

Kind of long as well, but that gives you an idea roughly of what happened. At this point, pfff, what's the rush? Furthermore, why be anxious for a final version that will incorporate anti-pirating measures with rigorous game disc checks? I'm not releasing anything till I finish all that, add to the fact that I have much less time to be wasting on the PC given that winter is finally over. I do have other things that need to be worked on.

Wow, it went through. I figured at the least, it'd tell me it was too long.

Sent by zaratus on Apr. 03, 2007, 12:43:40 AM[ Delete ]

That wasn't funny!!!!11 The longer you delay your patch just proves how much of an arrogant greedy bastard you are and just proves you have no intention of ever releasing the patch to the public for absolutely no cost which is how it should be because you should do it for the fans and not be greedy and you deserve nothing for your work! It should be available for free, and I should not have to pay a dime for it!@@!!!11 You are just greedy for trying to sell your patch! It must be free or else it's illegal! You are profiteering off someone elses work!!!

Your malicious code on your website broke my monitor, and I had to spend $695 to get a new monitor, so I can play my copy of Felghana that I torrented! I'm going to report you for putting a virus into my monitor making it not work right! Why would you do that you mean avaricious person! See, this is why you don't deserve voluntary donations to receive your patch early!
--------

Bet you are sick of hearing that? Sorry, I just had to. You could probably tell that was fake though - most people who rant like that - every other word would be spelled wrong, and capitalization? What's that? Not to mention punctuation. Besides, I actually bought the game and donated as well. =P Umm, this is probably going to kill the shoutbox it's so long. Meh. Gotta love how you get all this drama over your Felghana patch, yet you've been doing this for your other patches as well, correct? Yet, I don't remember drama for those (though granted, I wasn't as big of a Ys follower then either)

Anyway, keep up the good work with the patches, and I'm looking forward to the final version whenever it gets released. Though, of course, always hoping for sooner rather than later. =P OK, now time to see if I killed the shoutbox. Grin
